Dr. Masumi H. Odari
Welcome to the Department of Literature at the University of Nairobi. The Department of literature occupies a very important role in the study of literature not only in this country but also in the region, and in the continent. This department is credited with the revolutionizing of the literature curriculum when Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Taban Loliyong, Owuor Anyumba and Okot Bitek led their African colleagues in demanding the democratization of the study of literature. The Department set the pace for the rise of African literature within faculties of Arts across Africa. This was a significant intellectual and pedagogic direction which provided the philosophical basis for the study of African literature in faculties of humanities/arts on the continent.
The department is alive to the needs of our graduates and the importance of contributing to the entertainment business and the need to inject a level of professionalism and strengthen the skills of those in the entertainment and education industries hence the introduction of B.A and M.A programmes in theatre and film studies.
The Department Literature provides a welcoming and friendly environment for all students. Post-graduate students and staff share their work-in-progress in the bi-monthly departmental seminars. Our department also has a vibrant Literature Students Association that is committed to bringing all literature students together and organizing events such as the book club, seminars and poetry nights. It is one of the few departments where undergraduate students publish their creative works in our student magazine Mwangaza..
In responding to the needs to provide our students with an enviroment that helps them to have a global sense of citizenship, the department has sent its students on exchange programmes to Japan, Korea and Germany. In addition to the exchange programmes, courses in Japanese and Russian literature, culture and languages were introduced this year. The department hopes to increase the number of exchange programmes to enable our students and staff to have invaluable opportunities to experience from other cultures and widen their perspectives that will empower them to become truly global citizens.
I hope that you find our website useful and encourages you to apply to study literature. To our students, I would like to wish you the very best in your studies.
