Professor Meghan Ference Leads Workshop on Ethnography, Language, and Nairobi's Matatu Culture

On July 2, 2026 the Department of Literature hosted Professor Meghan Ference, Assistant Professor at Brooklyn College (CUNY), for a one-day workshop with postgraduate students on her ethnographic study of Nairobi's matatu sector. Using examples from her long-term fieldwork, Professor Ference demonstrated how everyday experiences, language, and storytelling can be examined to reveal the cultural significance of the matatu industry in shaping urban life.

The workshop explored themes of labour, Sheng, gender, and identity, while highlighting ethnography as a powerful approach to documenting lived experiences and interpreting contemporary Kenyan culture. The engaging discussions encouraged students to reflect on the intersections of language, culture, mobility, and representation in literary and cultural studies.
