The University of Nairobi’s Department of Literature is honoured to host the 20th Triennial Conference of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (ACLALS) from July 1st to 5th, 2025, at the Main Campus.
This prestigious event will bring together scholars, writers, and researchers from around the world to explore the theme:
“Transcultural Englishes in a Multipolar World.”
The conference will feature keynote presentations from three renowned African literary figures:
• Yvonne A. Owuor – Story as Infrastructures of Thought: Africa Multipolarity, Resurgence and Mythos
A celebrated Kenyan author, Owuor will delve into the role of storytelling as a cognitive framework shaping Africa’s place in a shifting global order.
• Goretti Kyomuhendo – Intersection of Practice, Activism and Literary Production: The Shifting Centers in a Multipolar World
Ugandan novelist and literary activist Kyomuhendo will reflect on how literature, activism, and creative practice intersect to re-centre African voices in global discourse.
• Mukoma wa Ngugi – The English Metaphysical Empire and the Rise of the African Novel
A distinguished scholar and writer, Mukoma wa Ngugi will examine how African literature has evolved in conversation with—and often in resistance to—the legacies of English metaphysical traditions.
• Professor Grace A. Musila will deliver a keynote presentation titled "Refusal" at the 20th Triennial Conference of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (ACLALS). Her talk will likely explore aspects of "Transcultural Englishes in a Multipolar World," aligning with the conference theme.
This year’s conference promises rich academic dialogue, critical thought, and cultural exchange centered on the dynamic and evolving role of Englishes across global contexts.
We warmly welcome all participants to Nairobi — Karibuni!
