The Department has a long history of research in literary prose from across the world. Indeed, the Department is associated with Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Chris Wanjala and Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira, some of the leading prose writers and critics in the world. Students are exposed to prose from Kenya, East Africa, Africa and the rest of the world.

Head of Thematic Area:

Theatre and film production are rapidly taking centre stage in the entertainment industry. The proliferation of micro production units such as local videos and films and the many performances in our towns and villages in the form of community theatre, call for an academic input to enable us to harness the energies and creativities of Kenyans. In order to contribute to the entertainment business and create more jobs for Kenyans, there is need to inject a level of professionalism and strengthen the skills of those engaged in the entertainment and education industries.

The Department undertakes research in Oral literary artefacts from Kenya, East Africa and  beyond. The research combines empirical fieldwork excursions with qualitative and theoretical application with a view to extending the archival and theoretical reach of what already exists in the realm of oral literary knowledge.
